How to Pick a Great Cabin on a Cruise

103 2
If you're wanting to take a cruise, you might be wondering if it matters which cabin you book.
This is almost entirely subjective, but there are some general guidelines and questions to ask yourself.
If you're on a tight budget, get an inside cabin.
There are no windows so you have very little clue about the time of day, but since a lot of people spend their time out on deck or doing fun things on the ship and not in their cabin, it doesn't always make sense to pay for an expensive room if you're never in it.
If you have to see outside you can get an outside stateroom.
They have portal windows which don't open but you can see the water and what the weather is like.
If you either don't cruise often and want the best or really dream about eating breakfast on the balcony overlooking the water then definitely get a balcony cabin.
There's something so wonderful about sleeping with the door open and listening to the sound of the waves as the boat gently rocks you to sleep.
Does it matter where on the ship your cabin is? Well, the middle area often feels the least movement, but there are lots of people who prefer an aft cabin because the balconies are bigger and there's very little foot traffic.
It is a very long way from everything though, so plan on doing a lot of walking.
This is good if you need to burn off the calories from all the wonderful food you've just eaten.
You also want to avoid very noisy areas, which can be very low decks in the back (engine noise) and in the very front (anchor dropping).
Also consider what may be above or below you.
If you're right above a nightclub you may hear the pianoman and partying all night.
The same is true if they're right above you.
It's generally good to get a room on a middle floor with other staterooms above and below you.
In the end, very rarely do you have an extremely bad room because after all, you're on a cruise ship! If you do have problems be sure to talk to the stateroom attendants and guest services to see if something can be fixed or changed.
