How to Make a Moving Catapult

104 7

    Catapult Base

    • 1). Place two wooden craft sticks end to end. Use hot glue to add a third craft stick on top of the first two, centering it on the two sticks. Repeat the process and glue the two sticks together so that each layer alternates, two sticks to one stick.

    • 2). Repeat Step 1 to create two sides of the base.

    • 3). Lay the stick structures from Steps 1 and 2 so they are parallel to one another, with the sides with two sticks facing up. Glue a craft stick between the first and second layer of each stick structure to form one end of the base. Repeat the step on the other side.

    • 4). Flip the base over and glue another craft stick on each end.

    Catapult Sides

    • 1). Place two wooden craft sticks end to end and use hot glue to add a third craft stick on top of the first two so that it is centered. Repeat three times.

    • 2). Cross the ends of two of the structures from Step 1. Position the structures so that one has two sticks facing up and the other has one stick facing up.

    • 3). Glue a craft stick to each side of the open end of the crisscross shape to make the base for the side.

    • 4). Repeat Steps 2 and 3 to create the other side.

    Catapult Arm

    • 1). Place three craft sticks end to end. Center two crafts sticks on top and glue all of the sticks together. Repeat once.

    • 2). Glue both structures from Step 1 together so that each layer alternates, three sticks to two sticks, to create the arm of the catapult.

    • 3). Glue two craft sticks onto the three-stick side of the arm.

    • 4). Add two craft sticks to each of the thin sides of the arm, making them even with the craft sticks on the thick sides of the arm. Glue the sticks down.

    Adding the Axle

    • 1). Cut 1/4-inch wooden dowel to 6 inches.

    • 2). Center the dowel horizontally on one thick side of the arm so it rests just above one end of the top layer of craft sticks. Glue the dowel to the arm.

    • 3). Cut a 3-foot piece of string and lash it around the dowel, beginning at one side and wrapping it from side to side until all string has been used.

    Catapult Wheels

    • 1). Cut 1/4-inch dowel into two 6-inch pieces.

    • 2). Glue one wooden wheel to the end of each dowel.

    • 3). Cut a drinking straw into four 1-inch pieces. Place two pieces of the drinking straw on each dowel.

    • 4). Glue a wooden wheel to the other end of each dowel.

    Assembling the Catapult

    • 1). Stand the two sides upright and center them on the inside of the base so they are parallel to one another. Glue the sides in place.

    • 2). Glue two craft sticks on top of the base on each side of the side pieces to provide more support for the catapult.

    • 3). Place a craft stick upright in the bottom center of each side and glue it in place. Glue a stick horizontally to the top of each upright stick and the sides of the catapult.

    • 4). Glue one set of wheels to each end of the catapult at the bottom. Only place glue on the pieces of drinking straw, not the wooden dowels. Ring with hot glue each piece of drinking straw.

    • 5). Fill one 4-by-6-inch piece of cloth with pennies and tie all edges closed with a piece of string, leaving at least 6 inches of extra string. Tie the remaining string around the bottom of the arm at the same end as the dowel. Add a few drops of glue to secure it.

    • 6). Cut one cup out of an egg carton and glue it to the other end of the arm for the basket of the catapult.

    • 7). Place the dowel on the throwing arm in between the two crisscrossed ends of the sides of the catapult.

    • 8). Place an object such as a small ball or coin in the catapult basket and press down on the end of the arm with the bag of pennies to launch the object.
